AJSV Scholarship Program 2012

For over thirty years, the Australia-Japan Society of Victoria has organised numerous exchange programs through its many partners in Japan. Students who have participated in such programs have been challenged to deepen their understanding of another culture, gaining an insight into different way of life, including the language, customs and people of Japan. The opportunity to attend a Japanese high school, live with a traditional family, and travel the length of the country has provided young Victorians with countless influential experiences, lifelong friendships, as well as proficiency in a foreign language.

In 2012, the Society is again offering Victorian secondary school students in years 9, 10 and 11 the opportunity to participate in an established exchange program funded by a scholarship from generous sponsors. Two years ago, a decision was made to work with schools offering Japanese as a second language to enable their own students to participate in an exchange program wholly organised by the school. Following the success of a pilot scheme in 2010 and a similar initiative in 2011, the Society is pleased to provide the same scholarship opportunity in 2012 for eligible students to partake in a memorable experience in Japan.

Members of the Society are kindly invited to speak to eligible students and parents/guardians about the scholarship program so that they may submit applications to the society by the closing date, Friday 29/06/2012. Please advise them to consult the attached list of eligibility criteria and application procedures before submitting the application form.

Sweets: Tastes and traditions from many cultures

Sweets: Tastes and traditions from many cultures is a delicious exhibition and festival that are part of the Melbourne Food and Wine Festival and Cultural Diversity Week in March 2012.

Members of the Indian, Italian, Japanese, Mauritian and Turkish communities have come together with the Immigration Museum to jointly explore the historical and cultural significance of sweets. This unique project has seen these communities sharing sweet stories, traditions and recipes, not to mention fantastic creations from their kitchens!

Sweets Festival: Sunday 18 March 2012, 11am – 4 pm
The festival showcases cultural activities from the participating communities: food stalls and tastings, cooking demonstrations and workshops; food rituals and related performances; music; dance; films and displays.

Sweets Exhibition: 15 March 2012 – 7 April 2013
The exhibition displays images and objects, short films, recipes and popular expressions relating to sweets from the 5 participating communities.

Building global human capital: the Japanese experience

This interdisciplinary seminar explores the recent moves to enhance Japan’s competitiveness through the development of a more globally literate workforce.

Responding to the realities of global business engagement, Japanese firms, supported by the national government and industry bodies, are moving to develop their employees’ skills in areas such as foreign languages and inter-cultural leadership, as well as undertaking organisational renovations to allow such skills to be mobilised more effectively.

The many initiatives currently being debated and tested include adopting English as an official workplace language, incorporating more international experience into business training programs, and adopting pro-active strategies for the use of non-Japanese personnel. These moves have important implications not only for business practice, but also for social organisation, cultural identity and economic engagement in and around Japan.

This seminar brings academics from a variety of disciplines together with businesspeople and government representatives to discuss these developments, with a particular emphasis on the Japan-Asia-Australia business interface.

Chado Urasenke Tankokai Melbourne Association 20th anniversary

Chado Urasenke Tankokai Melbourne Association will host a

Lecture and Tea Gathering to celebrate its 20th anniversary

at NGV International (The National Gallery of Victoria).

Soshitsu Sen XVI, Grand Master of the Urasenke Chado Tradition will

travel from Japan to help us celebrate this special anniversary.

At the lecture, Grand Master will talk about “the spirit of Tea”, after

viewing a video presentation introducing Chado (the Way of Tea).

At the tea gathering, four different settings reflecting on the theme

“tsunagu“ (loosely translated as “ to connect”) will be presented.

Guests are invited to enjoy two settings. A different type of traditional

sweet and tea will be served will be served at each setting.

Experience 500 years of Chado, the Way of Tea.

Melbourne's one and only Japanese women's choir -Yukari Echo- is holding a special concert on Saturday 17 September 2011 at the Salvation Army Box Hill's Hall, 17-23 Nelson Road, Box Hill.

This was to be an occasion to celebrate their 30th year anniversary but members now have decided to make it also a fundraising event for the victims of the earthquake disaster in Japan.

The group hopes that many of you and your friends will join us and enjoy songs from Japan and other countries as well as guest instrumental performances and support this cause.

The concert will commence at 7pm (doors open at 6.30pm) and Entry donation is $10

Invitation Programme of JET Alumni To Disaster Stricken Areas in Tohoku

Approximately 14 former participants of the Japan Exchange and Teaching (JET)Programme will travel to Tohoku at the invitation of The Ministry of Foreign Affairs. They will stay in Japan for around one-week from August to September and meet-up with former colleagues and students, as well as observe reconstruction efforts in disaster stricken areas.

Ms Heidi Bressler, a former participant who departed from Tasmania, will travel to Iwaki City - her former placement between the 17-26 September. She is highly proficient in the Japanese language.
